UV Light Dives & Photos

An important part of the underwater photography business is knowing the gear, so this week I decided to begin testing different combinations of ultraviolet (UV) light products. There’s a lot more diving to do before we write an in-depth article for Bluewater Photo and the Underwater Photography Guide, however the past two nights provided a chance to dive with the Dyron Solaris with a yellow gel and the Sola Nightsea with an orange gel.
Seeing the vivid colors of fluorescent textures POP against the dark reef brings a whole new feel to diving and draws your eyes towards even the smallest life on the reef. The underwater UV lights work by “exciting” the fluorescent properties of certain creatures. By placing a yellow or orange gel over your camera lens (and eyes), the reflected blue/UV light will be blocked, leaving a view of just the fluorescing surfaces. It’s very cool.
