Capturing the Elusive

Capturing the Elusive

Oct 23

Colorful, beautiful, and devilishly quick.  Those are just some of the words I’ve heard people use to describe juvenile garibaldi.  These tiny versions of their parents, sporting their temporary iridescent blue spots, spend their days darting in and out of the shallow reefs. This past weekend I set out with the intent of capturing these speedy subjects, and portraying their elusive...

Wow.  Just wow.  Get it while the gettin’s good!  Warm, blue water, and amazing viz awaited us as we made our way from the Catalina Express to the Dive Park at Avalon this past weekend.  When I say “warm” I mean 69°F at 70fsw.  Viz was easily 70’+.  It was gorgeous.  We planned on three dives, and we made the most of every descent. This trip was designed to get my...

Thousands of Bat Rays!

Thousands of Bat Rays!

Oct 01

On the fourteenth of September, during the SoCal shootout, Andy, Patrick and Cindy went out in search of getting some shots to submit to the contest.  Little did they know, they were in for quite an amazing experience. They had run into a huge Mola mola on the way down to Redondo Beach to dive, a mile or two off the shore of Hermosa Beach.  Around the same spot on their way back, they started...

New Spin on a Common Subject

New Spin on a Common Subject

Sometimes finding a subject that inspires you to lift the camera up to your eye is challenging.  I recently took my 105mm macro lens and SubSee +10 close-up lens with me to Anacapa Island, and I found my inspiration in a tiny, but common subject: a Christmas Tree worm.  The colorful feeding plume was a perfect subject to use with my SubSee +10 diopter. I used auto-focus to focus on my finger...

Clear Viz on the Rigs – Olympus OM-D Video

Last weekend delivered some of the clearest waters in Southern California that I have ever seen. We had great diving on Friday and Saturday in the Channel Islands and it continued on Sunday when I met up with several friends to dive the Oil Rigs off Long Beach. There we encountered more amazing visibility, with 60-80ft visibility on the two different rigs that we visited. I used the new Olympus...

There has been exceptional visibility this past weekend at Catalina Island (including the dive park), ranging from 60-90ft, at Santa Barabara Island, Anacapa Island, and also at the Oil Rigs and Farnsworth Banks. Get out diving while you can! Bat rays are out in full force, and there  are also a lot of sea lions out. Black sea bass are scattered around the islands. A Mola Mola was seen at the Oil...
